Bio: A Chair Collection Inspired by Nature

Uncompromised Ergonomics and Organic Aesthetics

Bio is a conceptual research project in the subject of stylistics created by Vladimir Zagorac as a part of his doctoral studies. The chair collection draws inspiration from organic shapes and universal principles of nature.

The Bio chair collection, designed by Vladimir Zagorac, stands out with its unique and captivating form. The chairs are characterized by an ambiguous opening on the seat's back, resembling a leaf or shell, which gradually transforms into a distinctive shape reminiscent of the flower of the Calla aethiopica plant on the edge of the backrest. This edge bends slightly backwards and rises on one side, creating a visually striking effect.

What sets the Bio chairs apart is their asymmetrical silhouette. Despite the asymmetry, the functionality and ergonomics of the seat remain uncompromised, as the changes in shape occur only in the outer areas. The design team has carefully considered the balance between aesthetics and usability, ensuring that the chairs provide both comfort and visual appeal.

The Bio chairs are realized using a combination of materials and production techniques. Molded thermoplastics, welded laser-cut and pressed steel, cast aluminum, oakwood, and leather are skillfully incorporated to bring the design to life. The choice of materials adds to the overall aesthetic and enhances the organic lines of the seats, creating a harmonious contrast with the legs.

Designed for various uses, the Bio chair collection complements modern interiors with its simplistic asymmetry and unobtrusive form. The chairs invite interpretation and add a touch of natural elegance to any space. Whether used in residential or commercial settings, the Bio chairs are sure to make a statement.

The Bio project was the result of extensive research and exploration. Vladimir Zagorac and his team analyzed samples from flora and fauna, simplifying and stylizing them through drawings and 3D computer models. The aim was to create asymmetrical functional aesthetics within an ergonomic and fresh design, universally understood as a bio-form.

Throughout the design process, the team faced various challenges. The shape of the seat, reminiscent of natural forms, required careful consideration of curvature, orientation, distortion, and depth. The gradual changes in these attributes emphasize growth as a universally understandable natural pattern and accentuate the form through minimal spatial deformations associated with gravity and weight. Despite these challenges, the team successfully achieved a firm overall construct while utilizing asymmetry as one of the main design attributes.

The Bio chair collection is a testament to the beauty and versatility of nature-inspired design. With its unique form and uncompromised ergonomics, it has garnered recognition in the design community. In 2022, the Bio chair collection was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category. This prestigious award recognizes designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.

With its organic aesthetics and meticulous attention to detail, the Bio chair collection is a true testament to Vladimir Zagorac's talent and dedication to creating innovative and captivating designs.
